1. Three-Quarters of Americans Oppose Trump’s Military Parade
A new Spotlight Analysis from PRRI examines Americans’ views on the large-scale military parade set to take place in Washington, D.C., this weekend, marking the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday. Featuring thousands of U.S. soldiers, Army vehicles, planes, and fireworks, the event carries an estimated $45 million price tag. PRRI finds that 76% of Americans oppose the parade, including a majority (52%) of those who view Trump favorably. 2. Trump Announces Seven Military Bases Reverting Back to Names Honoring Confederates
For TIME, Brian Bennett reports that President Donald Trump will restore the names of seven U.S. military bases, reverting them to names of Confederate officers. These bases, located across the Southern U.S., were renamed by the Army during the Biden administration, following a 2022 study from the Pentagon’s Naming Commission that recommended new titles for military installations named after Confederacy leaders. PRRI finds that 52% of Americans support efforts to preserve the legacy and the history of the Confederacy, while 44% oppose such efforts.
3. Trump Team Plans To Send Thousands of Migrants to Guantanamo Starting As Soon as This Week
Nahal Toosi and Myah Ward for POLITICO cover the Trump administration’s plans to send at least 9,000 undocumented migrants to Guantanamo Bay starting this week. The plan to detain the migrants at Guantanamo Bay temporarily before deporting them back to their country of origin would significantly increase the 500 migrants who have been held at the facility since February and comes amidst legal efforts to block the administration from using Guantanamo Bay to house migrant detainees altogether. According to PRRI’s survey on Americans’ attitudes 100 days into the Trump administration, 61% of Americans disagree that the federal government should place immigrants who are in the country illegally in internment camps guarded by the U.S. military until they can be deported.
4. LGBTQ Teens Wanted a Pride Festival in Their Town. How Five Churches Made It Happen.
At Religion News Service, Rachel Berkebile describes how five churches came together to help LGBTQ teens organize the second annual Pride festival in in Park Ridge, Illinois, a quiet suburb of Chicago. While the local Park Ridge churches took the lead in organizing this year's event, other LGBTQ-affirming churches across the country often play a background role in their communities’ Pride events. The 2024 PRRI American Values Atlas finds that support for same-sex marriage among white mainline Protestants (76%) has increased by more than ten points in the past decade (from 62% in 2014).
